PU signs MoU with Chinese academy

PUNJAB University’s Department of Zoology and Institute of Mountain Hazard and Environment (IMHE) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

According to a press release, a PU team headed by Department of Zoology Chairman Prof Dr Muhammad Akhter visited Chengdu, China. PU’s Dr Zulfiqar Ali, Prof Deng Wei, CAS president, Prof Wang Xiaodon and Zhang Ning, deputy director of Mountain and Cooperation Department of Science and Technology, were also present.

Both parties agreed to cooperate in a spirit of mutual understanding and goodwill to strengthen the ties of partnership with the cooperative activities like joint research programme, collaboration on individual research projects of mutual interests and the study of techniques and methods, training of individual scientists through participation in collaborative projects, exchange visits of individual scientists, exchange of scientific and technical information.

Prof Deng said this MoU was a solid step towards technology cooperation framework agreement, which marks the IMHE strategy in South Asia.

Many of the department from PU can make collaborative projects with CAS professors and win scholarships for students/researchers with joint recommendations. Three students from Department of Zoology have already benefited with PhD scholarship with this link.

Lecture: A public lecture on linguistics by Dr Ahmar Mahboob from the University of Sydney was held at the Lahore College for Women University (LCWU) on Thursday.

According to a press release, the lecture, organised by the varsity’s Institute of Languages and Cultures in collaboration with the Directorate of Faculty Development and Internationalszation, addressed the importance of the study of languages for Pakistan: What kind of linguistics is more appropriate for Pakistan and how can such studies be used to respond to the needs of our country? Taking

a socio-semiotic perspective on language, the presentation defined language as a semo-genetic system: a system that helps us both construe and represent reality. Dr Mahboob argued that as a semiotic system, we use language in different ways in doing different things and point out the significance of this in a range of contexts. The presentation also highlighted the need for Pakistan to set up departments of linguistics (such as the one being planned at LCWU) that carried out research which could inform us as we addressed the needs of our country. The lecture was attended by LCWU Vice Chancellor, Principal of Kinnaird College for Women, and faculty from various varsities and students of LCWU.

PEF model: Punjab Education Foundation (PEF) on Friday held a meeting to discuss different facets of new model of its Foundation Assisted School (FAS).

PEF Director (FAS) Nadeem Masood chaired the meeting. PEF officials, FAS school partners in the districts of Lahore, Jhang, Chiniot, Sialkot, Kasur, Pakpattan, Okara and Sheikhupura besides representatives of NGOs working in the field of education in Punjab were also present. The meeting discussed the pilot project of launching new model of FAS which was designed to give free education to the deserving boys and girls in their districts though private partner schools.
